LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- We now know how many speeding tickets the California Highway Patrol handed out during its maximum enforcement period earlier this week.
According to the CHP, officers issued 11,767 speeding citations statewide over a 24-hour period that started on Tuesday morning -- 200 of those were for drivers traveling over 100 mph.
Overall, the CHP wrote 19,564 citations for various violations. And officers issued 2,807 warnings.
The CHP says speeding isn't just a violation, it's one of the leading factors in serious and deadly crashes.
The agency urges drivers to obey the posted speed limits, adjust speed for the road and weather conditions, stay focused and drive responsibily.
