SoCal to see Sunday showers thanks to impact from Hurricane Marie. Here's how much rain to expect

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Southern California will see showers, increased humidity and rough surf this Labor Day weekend as Hurricane Marie sends tropical moisture into the region despite remaining well offshore.

The best chance for rain this weekend is on Sunday, but shower chances return to the forecast after the Labor Day holiday.

How will Hurricane Marie impact Southern California?

Hurricane Marie has formed out in the eastern Pacific and is expected to remain well offshore of Southern California. Still, the storm is sending tropical moisture into the region, bringing increased humidity and a chance of showers and thunderstorms. The best chance of showers is Sunday morning and in the afternoon, especially across Los Angeles County.

Many areas will see a potential for 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch of rain, with on-again, off-again showers all day on Sunday, plus pockets of heavier rainfall and possible thunderstorms.

The foothill and mountain communities will see the heaviest rainfall.

High surf advisories and coastal flood advisories are in place for portions of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, where high tides and large waves could create minor flooding in vulnerable coastal areas through early next week, according to the National Weather Service.

With potential tropical showers, the beach communities can expect high surf and dangerous rip currents. Waves could reach six to 10 feet.

Hurricane Marie is expected to weaken to a tropical cyclone by Sunday night, and moisture will leave our forecast overnight and into Monday.

Sunday forecast

Los Angeles and Orange counties can expect a 60% chance of showers on Sunday, with a high of 80 degrees and a low of 68. Expect sunshine to return by Labor Day, paired with an increase in temperatures.

The valleys and Inland Empire on Sunday can expect a 70% chance of showers, with a high of 83 degrees and a low of 70. Temperatures in the upper-90s return by Tuesday.

Beach communities will see a 50% chance of showers and high surf on Sunday, with a high of 79 degrees and a low of 71. Waves could reach 10 feet.

Mountain communities on Sunday will see a 60% chance of storms, with a high of 65 degrees and a low of 50. Thunderstorm chances return to the forecast on Tuesday.

Desert areas can expect a 50% chance of showers on Sunday, with a high of 82 degrees and a low of 64. Palm Springs is expected to reach 96 degrees.
