El Sereno brush fire forces evacuation of elementary school

EL SERENO, Calif. (KABC) -- A small brush fire broke out Tuesday morning on a hillside in El Sereno, prompting the evacuation of students from a nearby elementary school, officials said.

Fifteen firefighters initially responded at 9:45 a.m. to the 2500 block of Mallory Street, just east of Harmony Lane, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The number of firefighters on scene later grew to 62.

The flames were quickly extinguished after burning one acre, leaving a charred black scar on the hillside.

"No structures threatened and no exposures identified," the LAFD said in an updated statement. No injuries were reported.

However, students were evacuated from nearby Farmdale Elementary out of an abundance of caution.

"Due to a fire near the school site, access to our campus is currently restricted and unavailable," the school's principal said in a statement. "For the safety of our students and our school community, we are rerouting our students to the campus of El Sereno Middle School."

Farmdale Elementary was closed for the day and will resume regular operations "once District and local fire officials declare the school to be safe for use," the statement said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
